This segment contains an interview with a trader who has been successful in adopting the tastylive method of trading options. Tom Sosnoff and Tony Battista sat down with John W. to discuss his trading journey.
John’s father, who made his money in private equity, set John out on his trading journey after John had already experienced a successful career in business. John was eager to learn, especially option trading. Initially, John went to almost every seminar and webinar and read multiple books and newsletters on trading.
John stumbled upon tastylive and it made a huge difference for him. Tom and Tony introduced John to the world of strangles and straddles. John mentioned that moving from strangles to straddles has taken him some time and he learned to trade smaller with straddles. John mentioned that his favorite segment, and from which he learned the most, was tastylive’s “Market Measures”. John started to “trade small, trade often” and sell premium during high IV Rank times. John considers himself a very conservative person.
John manages a portfolio in the 7 figure range including some IRAs. John trades 5-10 trades a day and is up 17% YTD in 2015. In 2014 with a low volatility environment and one way up action John was up only 5% for the year. He was up around 10% in 2013 (all of this after commissions). He has also given two presentations to classes at SMU, his alma mater.
